トルコ航空機による日本人救出事件の４０周年を記念し顕彰・感謝をささげる献花式の開催にあたりまして一言ご挨拶を申し上げます。

I would like to express a message on Flower Offering Ceremony to commemorate 40th anniversary Turkish Rescue and express gratitude to Turkish people

本日は、宮島昭夫（みやじまあきお）会長をはじめ、「トルコからの翼」４０周年顕彰有志の会の皆様、また市内の関係者の皆様方にご参列いただいた中で、今回の献花式が「オルハン・スヨルジュ記念園」において開催されることは、誠に意義深く、また大変光栄に存じます。

It is precious and meaningful to hold this Flower Offering Ceremony in Orhan Suyolcu Memorial Park of with the kind attendance of members of Group Commemorating Wings From Turkey with its Chairman Mr. Akio Miyajima, former Ambassador to Turkey, in addition to Shimonoseki citizens related to Turky. It is also a great honor of our city, Shimonoseki.

ご承知のとおり、「オルハン・スヨルジュ記念園」は、本市の姉妹都市であるイスタンブール市から贈られた５万球のチューリップの球根を基に本市が２００９年に建設したトルコ・チューリップ園に、イラン・イラク戦争の際、イランに取り残された多くの日本人の救出にあたっていただいた、イスタンブール市出身の元トルコ航空の機長、故オルハン・スヨルジュ氏の名前を冠したものでございます。

As all of you know, Orhan Suyolcu Memorial Park is named after Mr. Orhan Suyolcu, the captain pilot of Turkish rescue who played an important role to rescue many Japanese citizens left in Iran. The city of Shimonoseki built this park based on 50,000 tulip bulbs granted by Intanbul, which is our sister city as well as the hometown of Mr. Suyolcu.

本日、その地に志のある方が集い敬意を表すことは、今後の日本とトルコ、下関とイスタンブールの友好関係を更に深める契機となるとともに、次の日本を担う世代に、この素晴らしい歴史を知っていただく貴重な機会を与えていただいたと考えております。

I think the ceremony of today to pay our respect to Turky with the people full of good intentions in attendance is not only an important opportunity for us to deepen friendly relationships between Japan and Turky and Shimonoseki and Istanbul but also for next generations to understand the wonderful historical event.

改めまして、献花式の開催にご尽力いただきました有志の会の皆様をはじめ、これまで日本とトルコの交流に関わられた全ての方に厚く感謝を申し上げます。
結びに、日本とトルコの末永い友情と、本日ご列席の皆様のご健勝とご多幸を祈念申し上げ、挨拶とさせていただきます。

Now again, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the members of the organizing committee and people who contributed for the mutual relationship of Turky and Japan. I hope for the everlasting friendship between the two countries and the wellness and happiness of attendees today.
